Winds and surfing go hand in hand, as they influence the quality of the waves and the surfing experience. Learn a little more about it.
Wind is one of the weather conditions that most affects surfing. Its presence conditions the quality of the environment. From Las Dunas Surf Resort we are going to explain all this to you.
Winds and surfing: How does it influence?
In 1st place it is important to remember that winds are masses of air in movement, and depending on their speed and strength, they deform the waves. Changing from one moment to another the sea conditions.
How are winds classified?
This basically depends on the direction in which the wind blows, so we have 3 classifications and a 4th aspect.
1. On-Shore wind:
This first classification is known in Spanish as Virazón or Sea Breeze. As such it is the wind that blows from the sea to the land. This first classification is the worst for surfing.
Why, because this wind crushes the waves in a certain way, which prevents them from taking shape and makes them break faster and unpredictably.
2. Off-Shore wind:
This 2nd place is occupied by the wind called in Spanish Terral, that is, the one that comes from the land towards the sea. It is the best opportunity for surfing.
The Off-shore wind pushes the swell backwards, so that it delays the moment of breaking. This generates more accumulation of water and energy.
This type of wind in surfing helps to have a more orderly swell, with higher periods. In other words, it creates stability in the frequency of the waves.
3. Cross-Shore wind:
The 3rd place is occupied by the cross-shore wind or perpendicular to the coastline, it is important to evaluate the spot to know if it is good or not for surfing.
It depends on the location and orientation of the spot whether this cross-shore wind will affect or not what we expect from the surfing session.
4. Absence of Wind:
The extra position is occupied by the absence of wind, this generates the ideal conditions for beginners. Since there will not be the external force of the wind influencing the marine current.
Thus, it will facilitate the paddling, and in turn to balance. This condition is perfect to start surfing, since the marine conditions will be given by the characteristics of the sea bottom.
These are the 3 classifications of winds and surfing, apart we add a fourth one as the absence of the same. The wind is a very important factor to enjoy the best surfing session.
